Session Descriptions – in above order
1) Truth: This workshop explores Pilate’s and the world’s most urgent, yet most contested question, “What is truth?” John 18:38. What is the shape of the reality that we find ourselves in? Our culture has shaped us towards a just-material reality, no spiritual dimension. The supernatural and miraculous stories of the Bible are, culturally speaking, simply beyond believable. Hence, for many, the wholesale rejection of the Biblical message. We will look at both the Biblical answer as well as our culture’s answer, and the reasons given for each. We need both perspectives so we can become aware as to how much culture is shaping us. Far too many Christians are blinded to the degree that our culture has shaped them.
2) Faith: This cardinal virtue is not limited to followers of Messiah Jesus. Every human being, from the most astute scientist to the most erudite philosopher, to the maturest priest of Hinduism or Buddhism, all must begin with a set of unprovable assumptions. This fact is lost on most people today. We will explore the reality of humanities creatureliness, the necessity of making foundational assumptions all along the way. We will finish by exploring the dynamics of a true walk of faith that every believer in Messiah must aspire to. Furthermore, to verbalise faith in truth is one thing, to live it, may be quite another. That too needs to be explored.
3) Hope: Hope is the fire in all religions. All religions, including evolutionary atheism are seeking a better tomorrow. The cultural challenge of our day; are we to hope in God or hope in Man? The deepest struggles of our day hinge on that question. We need to understand this dilemma so that we can chart a sure course through our ever-darkening world. Hope, to be an anchor, must be rooted in truth. A living confident hope adds the glow to all our lives, no matter how desperate our situation.
4) Love: This study on Jesus’ “Love One Another” command, the most powerful transformative force on our broken planet, is an eye-opener. What kind of impact did Jesus’ mission have on human history? Far too many say,’ very, very little if any’ Oh how mistaken! We will look at history and expose the Lie-of-the-Millenium. We also need to look at Scripture to see how God’s plan for the Love Revolution can again be revitalised even in our day. I trust it will be a grand finale to these 4 sessions.
The focus in all sessions is to study the Biblical theme in the context of our contemporary culture. This dual understanding is necessary to expose the degree to which our Christian Walk has been compromised by the spirit of our times. So much of our understanding and growth in these Christian virtues has been stunted and stressed by failure to heed the warnings of Romans 12:2. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing, and perfect will.”
